Ebook About
New Bern was a valuable port city during the Civil War and the Confederates made many attempts to reclaim it.On March 14, 1862, Federal forces under the command of General Ambrose Burnside overwhelmed Confederate forces in the Battle of New Bern, capturing the town and its important seaport. From that time on, Confederates planned to retake the city. D.H. Hill and James J. Pettigrew made the first attempt but failed miserably. General George Pickett tried in February 1864. He nearly succeeded but called the attack off on the edge of victory. The Confederates made another charge in May led by General Robert Hoke. They had the city surrounded with superior forces when Lee called Hoke back to Richmond and ended the expedition. Author Jim White details the chaotic history of New Bern in the Civil War.

Book New Bern and the Civil War (Civil War Series) Review :

I knew very little about NC's Civil War experience and the geography of the New Bern area so I went into this book rather blind. As a history teacher I have read many war books where the author gets me lost in the details of battle or references so many names of commanders then forgets to remind the reader of the bigger picture of each battle. Not so with this book. Mr. White taught school for many years and his ability to tell a story and keep the audience engaged is evident here. I had the privilege of meeting him while doing some flood relief work after Hurricane Florence and he gave me a copy of his book. His genuineness and his passion for history was seen in person and seen in this book. First, Mr. White explained the battle movements and objectives in an easily understood manner yet that does not mean he sacrificed a scholarly approach to each battle. In the book he explains each battle in detail yet keeps the reader focused of the bigger objective of each skirmish, fight, and larger battle for New Bern and surrounding areas. I never felt lost in the trenches of the battles. I felt Mr. White was fair to both sides of the war, giving credence to what the Rebs and the Yanks were doing. His book wasn't told from just one point of view. And he was critical of both sides as well. Periodically, Mr. White would also remind the reader of events that had transpired and objectives that were being executed. For instance, he explains in detail the 4 prong attack on New Bern by the Rebels throughout one chapter. Then in another chapter he reminds the reader of the objectives of those 4 parts to keep the reader engaged. It is as if he is teaching/writing in a circular fashion, keeping the reader focused as events unfold throughout the war.Mr. White also made the characters in the history narrative personable. They weren't just names from the past. In listing all the men who were hanged in Kinston he told personal stories of some of them, such as how their wives got their husbands' bodies home.A wonderfully told history.
